NHS 111 vs GP vs A&E – What to Use and When

We understand it can sometimes be confusing to know which NHS service is right for your health concern. Using the correct service helps you get the right care faster and keeps emergency services available for those who need them most.

🏥 Contact Your GP Practice for:

  • Ongoing or non-urgent health problems

  • Long-term conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or blood pressure)

  • Medication reviews or repeat prescriptions

  • Referrals, fit notes, and test results

  • Mental health concerns that are not urgent

Please contact the practice during our opening hours for advice.

📞 Use NHS 111 for:

  • Urgent medical advice when the GP practice is closed

  • If you’re unsure where to go for help

  • Sudden illness or concerns that are not life-threatening

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week online or by phone. They can advise you, book you into the right service, or arrange urgent care if needed.

🚑 Go to A&E or Call 999 for:

  • Chest pain or signs of a heart attack

  • Difficulty breathing or severe shortness of breath

  • Signs of a stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech problems)

  • Severe bleeding, serious injuries, or loss of consciousness

  • Any life-threatening emergency

A&E and 999 should only be used for serious or life-threatening conditions.

Thank you for helping us ensure NHS services are used appropriately so everyone can receive the care they need.
