Managing Minor Illnesses at Home – When Self-Care Is Enough
Many common illnesses can be safely managed at home without needing to see a GP. Knowing when self-care is appropriate can save you time and help ensure appointments are available for those who need them most.
Conditions such as colds, sore throats, mild coughs, headaches, stomach upsets, and minor aches and pains often improve on their own within a few days. Rest, fluids, over-the-counter medicines, and advice from a pharmacist can usually help relieve symptoms.
Your local pharmacy is a great first point of contact for advice on minor illnesses. Pharmacists are highly trained and can recommend treatments or let you know if you need to seek further medical help.
However, you should contact the GP surgery or NHS 111 if:
